Living Intentionally: What God Has Prepared for You
Have you ever felt like you're just going through the motions of life? Checking boxes, meeting expectations, trying to keep up with everything on your plate? Many of us reach milestones—graduation, new jobs, life transitions—and wonder what comes next. But here's a profound truth that changes everything: God has been intentional about you long before you ever thought about Him.
Created With Purpose
Ephesians 2:8-10 reminds us of something extraordinary: "For it is by grace you have been saved through faith. It is not from yourselves. It is a gift from God. Not by works, so that no one can boast. For we are God's handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do."
Read that last part again. God prepared works in advance for you to accomplish. Before you woke up this morning, before you faced your current challenge, before you questioned your purpose—God had already thought of you. He's mapped out a journey that only you can walk. That should remove fear from your life and replace it with confidence.
Even more remarkable? Romans 11:29 tells us that God's gifts and calling are irrevocable. He doesn't change His mind about you. He doesn't withdraw what He's given. When doubt creeps in and you wonder if you've disqualified yourself, remember: God doesn't go back on His word.
Five Ways to Live Intentionally
If God is intentional about us, shouldn't we be intentional about how we live for Him? Here are five practical ways to embrace intentional living:
1. Live a Life Worthy of the Gospel
Philippians 1:27 challenges us: "Whatever happens, conduct yourselves in a manner worthy of the gospel of Christ." This means living as citizens of heaven, not citizens merely focused on earthly achievements.
Think about it. So much of life pushes us to build, accumulate, secure, and achieve—planning as if we're staying here forever. But nobody stays here forever. When we live as citizens of heaven, our lives should scream a different message: "I'm not from here. I'm passing through. I'm heading to glory."
The question becomes: What does your life look like in the absence of leaders? When no one is watching, when you're on your own for the first time, when the rules and boundaries fade—do you stand firm in your own faith? Not your parents' faith, not your grandparents' faith, but your personal relationship with Jesus Christ?
2. Be a Trustworthy Witness
First Peter 2:12 instructs us: "Be careful to live properly among your unbelieving neighbors. Then, even if they accuse you of doing wrong, they will see your honorable behavior and they will give honor to God when he judges the world."
Your life preaches a sermon to everyone around you. They're watching. They're waiting to see how you respond when times get tough. When you don't understand what's happening, who are you praising? What are you referring to?
When it makes no sense to praise God, praise Him anyway. Because He deserves it. And in that moment, you're ministering to those watching you. They'll think, "I don't know what they have, but I want some of that." And when they ask, you can tell them it's Jesus.
3. Live With Purpose
First Corinthians 9:24-26 uses the metaphor of running a race: "Don't you realize that in a race everyone runs? But only one person gets the prize. So run to win."
No athlete lines up hoping to finish fifth. They're in it to win. All athletes are disciplined in their training, doing it to win a prize that will fade away. But we do it for an eternal prize—one that doesn't end up dusty in a box in the barn.
This means running with purpose in every step. Not shadow boxing. Not swinging at nothing. Living for Christ gives us purpose because He's in us, directing us, leading us toward something that matters forever.
4. Live in Christ's Name
Colossians 3:17 says, "Whatever you do or say, do it as a representative of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks through him to God the Father."
Are you living as a representative of Christ? Many times, the world knows who you claim to know. They're watching how you respond, how you live. When someone wrongs you, how do you react? When life doesn't make sense, who gets your praise?
First Corinthians 6:19-20 takes this further: "Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own. You were bought with a price. Therefore, honor God with your bodies."
This truth removes our ability to walk around as our own person. We've been bought with a price. Our lives are His now. Outside of Him, we're nothing.
5. Live as a Light
Matthew 5:14-16 contains a startling declaration: "You are the light of the world, like a city on a hilltop that cannot be hidden. No one lights a lamp and puts it under a basket. Instead, a lamp is placed on a stand where it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your good deeds shine out for all to see so that everyone will praise your heavenly Father."
We know Jesus is the light of the world. But this passage reveals the evidence that Christ lives inside us: we become the light because of who's in us. Without Christ, there's no light in us at all. But with Him? We shine in a way that brings glory to the Father.
Don't Lose God's Phone Number
There's wisdom in the simple advice: don't lose God's phone number. His number? Jeremiah 33:3—"Call to me and I'll answer you and tell you great and unsearchable things that you do not know."
You don't know everything. Struggles will come. But call on Him, and He'll answer. He'll tell you things you couldn't figure out on your own.
Be alert, though. First Peter 5:8 warns: "Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour." The enemy hates what you represent in Christ. But remember—our God is the Lion of Judah. The devil is merely an imposter, a roaring lion trying to instill fear.
Come Back Home
Perhaps you've been wandering for too long. Life has gotten hard. The pressure is mounting. You don't have answers, and you feel like your life is slipping away.
God opens His arms today: "Come back. Come to me, all who are broken, weary, and heavy laden, and I'll give you rest."
Let the wandering stop. Come into a relationship with the Savior where you know who you are in Him and whose you are. Let that confidence lead you in this life of faith.
God has been intentional about you. Now it's time to be intentional about living for Him.
