Finding Refreshment in God's Presence
In the hustle and bustle of our daily lives, it's easy to feel drained, empty, and in desperate need of refreshment. We often try to fill this void with various worldly pursuits, but true and lasting refreshment can only come from one source - the presence of God.
The Psalmist beautifully captures this truth in Psalm 19:7-11, describing God's Word as "perfect, refreshing the soul." The Hebrew word used here for "refreshing" means "to revive or restore to wholeness." Isn't that what we all long for? To be made whole again, to have our weary souls revived?
In our current generation, often described as "crooked and perverse," it's more crucial than ever to find this divine refreshment. We're not called to escape our times, but to shine brightly within them. As Philippians 2:15-16 reminds us, we are to "shine among them like stars in the sky as you hold firmly to the word of life." This is only possible when we're continually refreshed by God's presence.
But how do we access this refreshment? The answer lies in seeking God earnestly, as David did in the desert of Judah. In Psalm 63:1-4, he cries out, "You, God, are my God, earnestly I seek you; I thirst for you, my whole being longs for you, in a dry and parched land where there is no water." When was the last time we longed for God with such intensity?
Often, our problem is that we won't humble ourselves before the Lord. We think we know what our life needs, but we keep walking the same old paths, doing the same old things. Instead, we need to ask, "What does the Lord have for me to do?" 2 Chronicles 7:14 provides a powerful promise: "If my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and I will forgive their sin and will heal their land."
This healing, this refreshment, comes when we dive deep into Scripture. Just as diving into the cool depths of a pool on a hot summer day brings relief, so does immersing ourselves in God's Word bring spiritual refreshment. We need to let God's Word speak to us in the Spirit, allowing Him to show us who He truly is.
The familiar words of Psalm 23 take on new meaning in this context. "The Lord is my shepherd, I lack nothing. He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters, he refreshes my soul." Notice the atmosphere - still waters, not a babbling brook. In stillness, we can see our reflection, we can "be still and know that He is God." It's an invitation to reflect on who God is and how He shows Himself strong in our lives.
Sometimes, finding this refreshment requires us to unplug from the world around us. Just as rebooting a router can restore an internet connection, so can stepping away from our daily pressures restore our connection with God. We need to get away from everything man-made and step into God's creation, breathing in His presence and celebrating His glory.
Jesus Himself modeled this for us. In Mark 1:35-38, we see Him rising early to pray in a solitary place, despite the demands of the crowds. When His disciples found Him, saying "Everyone is looking for you," Jesus replied, "Let us go somewhere else...that is why I have come." He knew His calling and prioritized time with the Father above all else.
But refreshment isn't just about feeling good - it's about being restored to wholeness so we can fulfill our purpose. In Matthew 12:9-13, we see Jesus healing a man with a shriveled hand on the Sabbath. The man had to humble himself, exposing his weakness publicly, but in doing so, he found complete restoration.
What are we holding onto that we don't want others to see? What weakness or sin are we hiding that's preventing us from experiencing God's refreshing touch? 1 John 1:9 assures us, "If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness."
It's time to stop reciting defeat day after day. We're called to live from victory to victory, surrounding ourselves with others who are excited about walking in God's promises. As the old hymn declares, "From victory unto victory, His army shall He lead, till every foe is vanquished, and Christ is Lord indeed."
Let's make a commitment today to seek God's refreshing presence. Let's dive deep into His Word, step away from the noise of the world, and humble ourselves before Him. As we do, we'll find ourselves restored, revived, and ready to shine brightly in this generation.
Remember, our God "makes a way where there ain't no way, rises up from an empty grave." He is worthy of all praise, honor, and glory. As Revelation 5 paints the picture, countless angels and every creature in heaven and earth will one day declare, "Worthy is the Lamb who was slain to receive power and riches and wisdom and strength and honor and glory and blessing!"
May we join that chorus today, allowing God's refreshing presence to fill us and overflow to a thirsty world around us.
